The total-loss playbook: getting paid what your car was actually worth

By Tom Varga · January 28, 2026 · 6 min read

When your car is totaled, the carrier’s valuation software produces a number that looks precise to the dollar. Treat it as an opening position. I wrote these valuations for twenty years: the software is honest arithmetic over a dishonest sample — it anchors on the cheapest “comparable” listings it can find, sometimes hundreds of miles away, often with trim levels and mileage that don’t match your car.

Your playbook is short. First, demand the full valuation report, not the summary — you are entitled to see every comp. Second, pull your own: five or six current local listings for your year, trim, and mileage band. Third, document what the software can’t see — new tires, recent timing belt, options packages — with receipts. Send the comps and receipts in writing and ask for a re-valuation. That single, documented email moves more settlements than any phone argument ever will.

Know your leverage points: you can usually reject comps outside your market, demand tax and title fees be included (they must be, in most states), and if the gap stays wide, invoke the appraisal clause in your policy — a formal process where your appraiser and theirs pick an umpire. Carriers settle most appraisal demands before the umpire is ever hired; the clause is your quiet nuclear option.

Lanewise clients: send us the valuation before you accept it. Checking that math is literally Tom’s job, and the review costs you nothing.
